Ilwis crash opening atmospheric corrected files

Locky
Hello,

I am using SEBS for Ilwis version 3.8.1. Everytime I perform atmospheric correction Ilwis crashes while opening the file. The image is saved in my working directory but when I open it with Ilwis the program crashes. With other GIS programs (Arcmap 10.2) the files open without any problems.

Moving forward with SEBS using the atmospheric correct images, I get a blank map of land surface temperature (LST). However, other images that are inputs of LST (emissivity, albedo, ndvi etc) look just fine. Could someone please help me with this problem as all the solution I could think of have failed.

Thank you in advance

Hi!

- Atmospheric correction (SMAC) is one of the utilities under the SEBS
Tools (Surface Energy Balance System).
- The utility requires at least two inputs: 1. the Top Of Atmosphere
reflectance (a raster image), and 2. the coefficient file for the sensor
that was used (you need to download this file).
- The other 8 parameters can be raster images, if you have them. If not,
a constant value can be used: this constant value will be used to
correct the entire image. For larger areas, it is recommended to find a
raster image.
- Solar and sensor angle maps (raster images) can be computed by a
separate utility. Then for each pixel the angle is used that corresponds
to it.
- All raster inputs used in SMAC must use the same GeoReference (this
means that they must have the same extents and pixel-size).

SMAC will produce correct results if correct input is provided. The
crash that you have mentioned probably means that a bad coefficient file
was used (the file is not in the correct format), since all other inputs
are being checked by the application before computing. This could indeed
explain that when used for further computations, the result is
empty/white images.

If you are unsure about the sensor coefficient file, please reply to
this e-mail as to which file you need.

Furthermore, please use a newer version of ILWIS (version 3.8.5).

Re: Ilwis crash opening atmospheric corrected files

Thank you,

I tried Ilwis version 3.7.2, 3.8.1 and also 3.8.5 but still got the same results.

I downloaded the coefficient files from 52 North website and used them without any alteration. I also assumed that coef_MODIS1_DES.dat (because my study area is in an arid region) was meant to be used for the extracted band1 from MOD021KM (EV 250m b0), MODIS2_DES.dat for band 2 and so on until reflectance band 7. The solar zenith, solar azimuth, sensor zenith and sensor azimuth were extracted from the modis geolocation file MOD03 and the raster files were used during the SMAC process. However, I also tried using constants but still produced an empty map. The other parameters were constant numbers at all times.

I am unsure if the coefficient files were in the right format and if the right file was used for each band. Your assistance regarding this would be highly appreciated.

best regards

Re: Ilwis crash opening atmospheric corrected files

Hi!

Since you have downloaded the coefficients file from http://52north.org
, found under Downloads->Earth Observation->Data
Bases->SMAC->smac_coeffiles (smac_coeffiles.zip), they are the right files.
I did notice that the SMAC application does not work correctly if the
data-files and/or the coefficient-files are placed in paths with spaces
(E.g. C:\My Data\smacdata or C:\Program Files (x86)\ILWIS\smacfiles), or
the image files themselves contain spaces (e.g. modis map 01.mpr). Other
difficult characters must also be avoided (e.g. !@#$%^&*()~`-=+|[]{};'",)
Please check if this is the case, and ensure the paths/filenames are
simplified.
You can assume that all other applications under the SEBS Tools have the
same requirement (simple folder and filenames).
If this still didn't help, I will ask you to send me the data that you
are using (just the input for SMAC). You may skip sending the data to
the [hidden email] e-mail list (just send it to my e-mail).
