Problems importing TIF file

Yvonne
Hello, I am trying to import a TIF file to Ilwis, but is constantly shows me this error.

C:\.....Ilwis38\\Resources\Def\datum.def was not found.

I have been working with ILWIS, but with already imported maps,
so I know Ilwis but not the problems/errors with starting up.

Hope you can help me,

Cheers Yvonne

Re: Problems importing TIF file

Or in another way, it says: an unnamed file contains an incorrect path.

I really don't know what I should do to fix it.

Hi Yvonee,

you are using the version 3.8 or the 3.8.1? If you are using the 3.8 upgrade to 3.8.1 several buts where correct including: resolved bug when importing raster file (crashed when opening the file, but was fine when ILWIS was reopened).

I test now with the TIFF file in version 3.8.1 and the error that you mention above appear. So my advise is to use the version Academic 3.31 that work very good and without bugs to import Tiff Files.

Thanks for report the bug.

Also I noticed that the option to import Shapfiles is in "ILWIS - RASTER" so something is wrong.... and also don' t work....

Best Regards
José Santos

Re: Problems importing TIF file

Martin Schouwenburg

Hi,

Funny, the shape file as raster. Anyway. I mainly test the import routines through GDAL and not the old ILWIS ones. As far as possible I will remove the ‘old’ imports as I don’t maintain that code anymore ( I don’t have time for it J ). I solved some other issues with imports (and some other bugs). There will be a ILWIS 3.8.2 somewhere in the second half of November that consolidates these changes plus some extras

-          Extended space time cube. A colleague of mine will write an entry on the blog (which has been dormant for some time) about it

-          Extended selections of features(in maps) and tables ( I will write a blog entry about this)

-          Iso clustering

-          Shortest path (Dijkstra)

-          Site selection based on a genetic algorithm

Orfeo plug-in has progressed but I had to pause the work as my (crappy) computer simply couldn’t handle the load anymore. I will get a new one this week (they promise me, we will see) so in November I can continue this.

Re: Problems importing TIF file

José Santos
Hi Schouwenburg,

Thanks for the information. GDAL works fine with shapefiles but I don't see the option to import TIFF files there only GeoTiff...

Another big issue is the future replace of Datum files for PROJ4, instead of putting the values in the tables with the libary PROJ4 that is no need. With time...

Best Regards,
José Santos

Re: Problems importing TIF file

Martin Schouwenburg

Proj4 has basically no “named” datums like Ilwis. The datums are handled by their ‘towgs84’ entry in their data files. So yes, proj4 has a similar method as Ilwis, but the datums are mostly anonymous.  Ilwis4 is able to use those (proj4)entries and construct its own datum from it, Ilwis 3 obviously not.  I am not sure if Ilwis4 needs named datums or if the proj4 method is sufficient. With regard to user defined coordinatesystems with own datums and such, a named datum has preference above the anonymous method (certainly in the user interface). But we will see if this use case is sufficiently important to warrant the named datums.

Re: Problems importing TIF file

Use the tiff import of gdal branch when importing. I thought ( apparently wrongly) that I had removed the old ilwis style import tiff that gives this error. It is no longer maintained so the gdal one is the only valid one.

Hi Yvonne,

I had the same probem using version 3.8.4, I solved it by converting my scanned map from .tif to bitmaps (.bmp).

Hope this helps?
