Re: ILWIS 3.4

ElenaABaldina
Dear colleagues!
As my experience shows the best free and open ILWIS release is the 3,4. Many and many of problems discussed  at ILWIS forum finished up by the words that...ILWIS   3.3 Academic  works fine, or has no such a problem... As I know ILWIS   3.3 Academic is not a free release, it needs to have codes, but it is ILWIS 3.4 that has all the benefits of .ILWIS   3.3 Academic, and works free without any codes. I asked moderators or some of officials at 52-north to make the ILWIS 3.4 release open for download, but nothing's been done. So if anyone wants to try  ILWIS 3.4 release, it is possible to get it from me using this link http://yadi.sk/d/Mra_u59J0r4zO

Hi Alana,

In fact the new version don't have the option to add new points, neither the beta. I don't remember if the version 3.7.2 have that option is a question of trying. I use the version 3.3 Academic and the last one. In version 3.3 Academic that option exist (EDIT) and works fine.

So Mr Schouwenburg if you can add the edit option to the layout view the community will appreciate. Many thanks.

Best Regards,
José Santos

points. I've created the point map. I then right click on it in the main window and click 'edit object'. It opens a new window with the map (blank as I haven't added any points yet) but I can't figure out how to add the points! All the tutorials online say that there should be an Edit menu in this map window but in ILWIS 3.8 there isn't! The point map window only has the menu options: File, Layers, Options, Help. Nothing else.

Re: ILWIS 3.4

Dr. Ir. Daan Vreugdenhil
With large composed images we found ILWIS 3.3 the most stable.
For that purpose, we still keep it available for everybody to download at: http://www.ilwis.org/open_source_gis_ilwis_download.htm
The "patch" replaces the previous code.

BTW, I know I have to update the site to 3.81. Too much travel lately......
Enjoy,
Daan

Thanks for the link Elena. So for clarification the download for ILWIS 3.3 Academic that's available here http://www.itc.nl/ilwis/downloads/ilwis33.asp requires a registration code after installation? I haven't installed it yet as I'm finishing creating a tutorial in 3.8.1 first.

Dear list,

Elaine what you saying about ILWIS 3.4 Open is true but about ILWIS 3.3 Academic is not true. I told you once that ILWIS Academic was the last release from ITC before became open and pass to North 52 Initiative.  So, to allow the ILWIS 3.3 Academic became freeware (different from Open Source and means without asking the registration code), ITC developed one patch that allow ILWIS 3.3 Academic became free, in the website of ITC - ILWIS you have this:

ILWIS 3.31 is the last service pack made available by ITC. With this, ILWIS 3.3 is enhanced with new functions and bugfixes that were developed after the release of ILWIS 3.3, but that were not yet made available as an official service pack. ILWIS 3.4 Open is derived from ILWIS 3.31; in ILWIS 3.4 Open, copyrighted components were removed in order to be able to offer it as open source software.

Because ILWIS 3.3 Academic have some modules proprietary like, for example, PCI - GeoGateway, they where taken out to allow the release of ILWIS 3.4 Open Source.

In the end, ILWIS 3.4 Open Source is the Open Source version of ILWIS 3.3 Academic without the commercial stuff. Despite that ILWIS Academic versions where....Academic e non-commercial so you can use for free. Just download the software and the patch available in the ITC website and use for free there's no "code" evolved...

Will be nice that North 52º allow again the download of the version 3.4 Open.

Best Regards
José Santos

Hi Elena,

After struggling to import a .tiff image into Ilwis version 3.8.4 and later failing to georeference an image in the same because it was invisible in the display window, I decided to take your advice and download Ilwis 3.4, for some reason It failed to download so I opted to  download Ilwis 3.3. In this version I was able to import a tiff with no problems and open to a georeferencing window, where the image was visible. I now want to start on-screen digitising and I'm quite confident all will go well.

Thanks for that tip.

Regards,

Wiza
