Trouble Importing Raster from ArcMap into ILWIS for SMCE

Newbie
To Whom it May Concern

I am currently involved with a project wherein I am using various spatial criteria to develop transport routes. As such, I am creating raster maps of the various criteria in ArcMap 10.3 and would then like to import the rasters into ILWIS so that I can conduct a Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE). Once the suitability map has been created, I will then import it back into ArcMap to perform the Network Analysis and determine the route. Figure 1 below provides an example of one of the rasters created which differentiates between different road categories. The raster is in .tif format and contains an attribute table as shown in the figure.

Figure 1: Image of Raster Created in ArcMap with Associated Attribute Table

With the raster created, I imported it into ILWIS using the Operations - Import command. Four file types were created, namely: .mp#, .grf, .csy, and .mpr. After creating the Criteria Tree, although the raster was imported, I could not load it to the criteria tree as it was not recognized. I then went to File - Open... and located the raster. The image shown has no resemblance to the original raster and on viewing the Representation, it also appears as though the attribute table was not transferred across. Figure 2 below shows a screenshot of the raster and associated legend.

Figure 2: Image of Transferred Raster in ILWIS

I have tried numerous other criteria maps (rasters) and all display in the same way. Can you please assist and point out where I may be going wrong when importing the rasters into ILWIS?

Hello,

Try to export the file, in ArcGIS, as ASC file and then import it into ILWIS.

Which version of ILWIS are you using? On the previous ones there was a known bug in TIF import option for ILWIS --- Raster. Instead ILWIS ---- Raster option use GDAL.

Good luck.

Re: Trouble Importing Raster from ArcMap into ILWIS for SMCE

Newbie
Hi José

Thank you very much for the response! Shortly after I posted the request for help I discovered that the GDAL function imports the raster properly. I had previously tried importing a TIF using both the standard Import and General Raster and neither worked.

The only thing I am struggling with now is to get the map to display with the same attributes as it goes in ArcMap. To achieve this I believe I need to change the domain of the raster, import the attribute table from ArcMap and link the two. I have not had the time yet to try this so hopefully it works?!

To answer your question I am currently using the latest version, namely 3.8.5.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Michael

Re: Trouble Importing Raster from ArcMap into ILWIS for SMCE

Bas Retsios
Hi!

I am not sure where ArcMap stores the raster file's attribute table,
when you have a tiff file named 'Roads_in_5_km.tif'. It might be in a
separate file, or in the corresponding project file (.mxd), or in a
corresponding geodatabase, or in the geotiff file itself (but I am not
aware that the tiff file format supports storing attribute data inside
the file). However ArcMap provides several options to access the table.
Most likely you will succeed by doing the following steps:
1. In ILWIS, import the raster image (the tiff file).
2. In ArcMap follow the steps to also export the corresponding raster
attribute table (choose a format that is compatible with the ILWIS
import options for tables; feel free to experiment a bit, but CSV is a
good option)
http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Exporting_a_raster_attribute_table/009t0000005z000000/
3. In ILWIS, import this table
At this point, ILWIS is unaware of the relationship between the raster
and the table. You will have to restore the relationship.
To do this, change the domain of the raster to be the one of the table:
4. In ILWIS, right-click on the imported raster, and select
"Properties". Change the domain from "value" to the domain that the
table has (e.g. 'Roads_in_5_km.dom'). Click OK.
5. In ILWIS, right-click again on the imported raster. Now the option
"Attribute Table" is available. Enable it, and select the imported table
(e.g. 'Roads_in_5_km.tbt'). Click OK.
This assumes that the raster-values point to the corresponding
table-rows. If this is not the case, and a shift of +1 or -1 is required
on the raster-values, you can pre-compute a shifted raster before step
4, by a simple formula, e.g. "new_raster := in_raster - 1" for a shift
of -1, and then continue working on "new_raster" in steps 4 and 5.

Cheers
